Sugar Water

Tiny dragonflies,

With water-colored wings

Of amber stripe,

Land each on their own

Frond leaf,

At the dry, nethermost tip.

Far from the heart of palm,

Sap source.

Head down, intent,

They dine?

Or drink morning dew from

A bowl of husky fiber?

Anyway,

They know what they are doing.

And I wonder –

Water, or sugar, in unexpected places.

Unexpected to me, image-bearer and

Very good,

But not unexpected to an artless

Creature of the air.

Faith lands on a husk and finds

Water.

Faith is a husk dispensing

Sugar.

Dragon flies and dry fronds

Simply declare that

Sugar water is true and

Can be expected.

Meditations at the east-facing window and in Isaiah 37

That Melting Gift

Call me, too, a righteous child,

Lord of smelting fire!

Purge me, too, of graft and gods,

Lord of all that is.

Give me, Lord, that melting gift,

That yielding to Your form.

You will and will the lowly redeem,

And wholly lift me up.
