Siegs In Detroit – Snapshots Finale

* “Brrrrr, y’all!” was the theme, though I know, I know, 30 isn’t cold.

* Mom delivered a finished quilt to an inspiring woman 87 years young who lives in an antique dealer’s dream home with twenty parakeets  and a picture of herself aged 40 that reminds me that old people are just wrinkled young people. Her recent post-hip replacement note to herself reads: “Get up, girl! Show me what you’ve got!” How can you not admire that?

* Costco debauch.  Thousands of people buying like Christmas didn’t just happen.

* Lessons in generosity from my brother and sister-in-law.  They give for the joy of giving, not to impress and not for thanks.

* Pistons vs. T’wolves at the Palace.  Oh yeah.  I feel straight savage typing that (see translation below).  Pre-game video on jumbotron hypes the underdog status – “Detroit isn’t pretty, but we’re here to stay,” and so on – and doggone if it doesn’t work.  Moist-eyed, I fist bump the mayor back and proceed to watch Drummond and Co defang the ‘Wolves.  My little mother jukes to the evocative beat and I think, “OK, I get it; this is do-able.”
DSCN5289DSCN5293* We won’t mention that other New Year’s Eve game because I am too classy to gloat.

* Early AM departure in the snow says, no, this isn’t do-able after all.  Get me south and quick.  Happy New Yearing our way 700 miles straight south, the temp only climbs 10 degrees. I feel cheated.  Alabama hasn’t kept its part of the bargain.  But we pull in to 1736 Woodland St and the pecan tree is still standing, the Christmas Day leak hasn’t leaked anymore, the accumulated mail hasn’t been delivered yet, and the new Sherlock starts in an hour.

* Prayers at the dinner table over eggs and bacon, Will suggests big to little, so we pray for our world, our country, our church, our family and we tell the Lord we trust Him and ask Him to make us worthy of His name this year.

* “The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!”  Psalm 50:23

Happy New Year!

“straight savage” – hardcore, awesome, brutal, cool

12 Days of Christmas Random Observations

December 13 – I don’t always run, but when I run, I run in my Piggly-Wiggly T-shirt.

December 14 – After begging Will (to no avail) to take a snack for between exams, I realize that my last words will probably be: “And take a granola bar to my funeral; you might get hungry. (dies)”

December 15 – The problem with watching Judge Judy is you can never lie to yourself again.  She’s in your head saying,  “So you admit you received the text and just pretended you didn’t. Your case is dismissed.  Get a job.”

December 16 – Nativity wars continue.  Just when I get it perfect, I discover this.

December 17 – I better get to Walmart quick before they remove Christmas and stock Valentines. Yes, the Walmart that I can see from my front yard and had a come-apart over and now visit twice a day.

December 18 – Tonight’s invitation says ‘cocktail attire.’  I feel like Jane Eyre trying to find something appropriate for an appearance in the parlor, my gray everyday frock or . . . my gray everyday frock.

December 19 – When I say, “She brought home her laundry,” what I mean is she evidently hasn’t done laundry since early September.  This had to be seen to be believed.

December 20 – Handel’s “The Messiah” is glorious! Definitely better live at the Alys Stephens Center than on CD while I’m groggy in the early morning and trying to eat a bowl of cereal.

December 21 – My tongue thinks:  If I keep rubbing against this chipped tooth, maybe next time it won’t cut me. Hmm. OK, well maybe if I do it again . . .

December 22 – Disorienting sounds from a December morning run:  leaf blowers and lawn mowers.

December 23 – Whispered Non-PC Thoughts Before Morning Coffee:  We deserve a servant.

December 24 – Love looking out the window and seeing these two cars!  How blessed we are.  As the rain pours down and pools in our front yard, Lord, so let me love people this new year.

December 25 –  “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel – which means God with us.” Luke 1:23

Merry Christmas!
